Quilts by the Beach
June 7 & 8, 2024
On June 7 & 8, Pincushion Quilt Guild held their first quilt show in 5 years. There were approximately 100 quilts on display, all produced by members of our guild. What a show!
There were 432 people who paid admission over the 2-day event.
Total # of entries from our members is 145.
Vivian Foley won the "Best of Show" prize. For the CQA Rosette.
CQA is Canadian Quilters Association.
On display were large bed quilts, small bed quilts, Large wall hangings, small hangings and miscellaneous quilted items. There was a Bistro with sandwiches, treats and beverages. We had a beautiful Raffle Quilt, made and quilted by some of our members. The winners were a pair of sisters from West Kelowna. We had 20 baskets for a penny auction. There was also a Merchant Mall with 4 local vendors participating - Tyjo’s Fabrics, Batik Corner, Kingfisher Craft Company and Black Rabbit Fabrics.
At the show we presented a Quilt of Valor to a retired military member who was injured in the Vietnam war. The mandate of Quilts of Valor Canada is to comfort and thank our military members who have been injured or made ill as a result of their military service. The quilt is different from their medals and certificates which come from a grateful government; the quilt is a gift from a grateful nation, the Canadian people.
We also made a presentation of approximately 100 quilts to the Kelowna Women's Shelter and the West Kelowna Salvation Army. Pincushion Quilt Guild members sew and donate caring quilts to the community every year. In 2023 we donated 140 quilts to NICU, Women’s Shelter, Salvation Army, citizens of Merrit and Princeton who lost homes in floods and West Kelowna citizens who lost homes in fire.
Pincushion Quilt Guild has 40 members and a wait list for more. We quilt every Wednesday, except for the summer and Christmas, at the Peachland Community Centre. Drop ins are welcome.
Who We Are
Named after the distinctive mountain that overlooks Peachland, Pincushion Quilt Guild is an energetic and talented group of 40 quilters who meet almost every Wednesday from September thru June to sew, cut, learn consult and yes, sometimes to just chat. Some of our members have quilted for over twenty years and some are closer to beginners.
Every year we undertake several “community projects” and have currently designated the Kelowna Women’s Shelter as the recipient of the majority of our donation efforts. Each year our efforts produce small quilts to be given to ladies and some children when they arrive at the shelter. The ladies get to keep them, and hopefully they supply some love and comfort to their new owners. Our group has also made close to 100 Christmas stocking for donation to The Salvation Army, who fill them as gifts for the less fortunate in our community. We also collected and presented them with sample size toiletries to help them out a bit. Each year we participate in the Angel Tree gifting at Christmas instead of exchanging gifts amongst ourselves.
We may be at full membership capacity right now, but you are welcome to add your name to our waiting list if you would like to join our guild. Once COVID restrictions are lifted we will resume drop-ins where you can in drop-in for $5 a visit. The first visit is free. We meet from about 9 AM to 4 PM on Wednesdays and hold a guild meeting on the 4th Wednesday of the month.
Bring your sewing machine and equipment or a hand quilting project. We usually have plenty of room where we meet in the Banquet Hall of the Community/Recreation Centre and there is a bit of basic equipment available for people to use. There will always be someone there to answer a question or help solve a problem and we love to make new friends.
