 DWELL

May 16 - June 21

This exhibition features multi-disciplinary, mixed media works taking the forms of encaustic sculptural forms, pottery (as art and functional), wall-mounted dimensional pieces, mixed media on canvas featuring collage, found objects and acrylic painting. All content, with stylized interpretations and artistic liberties, will highlight the intricate, mysterious beauty of what ‘dwells’ in the undergrowth and on the forest floor.

Dwell … inhabit, reside, occupy, exist, live; the forest floor theme explores the habitat of the incredible life forms and curiosities that dwell in, on, and around the undergrowth. This combined body of work calls attention to a hidden ecosystem with fantastical, whimsical, and otherworldly images and objects, to engage the viewer in a sense of wonder and surprise. Mixed media, encaustic and clay offer the tactile and textured mediums required to simulate the detritus of the forest floor, such as fungi, mosses, lichen, and other organic matter. The viewer will be challenged to dwell on the biological and ecological importance of this ecosystem and how the living, along with dead and decomposing contribute to the health of the forest floor.

These artists are, in all ways, influenced by the natural world and organic forms. Both are collectors of found and discarded objects; that through artistic vision, techniques and problem solving, can be repurposed and given new life. The artists challenge themselves in the manipulation of their media to translate and celebrate the overlooked beauty of a hidden world. Mixed media could include close up details of fungal structures created with sari silk, rusty bits of metal, charcoal, oil pastel and hand embellished collage papers. Encaustic and ceramic mediums would be combined with the addition of fabric, paper, wood, wire, and twine.
