Restoring the Rotary Wall
July - August, 2019
July - August, 2019
Volunteers in the Peachland Community Arts Council are once again tackling the restoration of the Rotary Historic Mural.
This is our second attempt at a "touchup" on the wall. Last time was 8 or 9 years ago. The wall was in pretty bad shape and we spent many hours sanding & filling cracks. Painting is underway and we anticipate it will take the whole month of August to complete the project. The cost of the paints is being shared between the Rotary and the Arts Council. We are being very careful to keep the painting close to the original.
Some Peachlanders may not know the history of the mural. In 1999 the Rotary commissioned local artist, Robyn Lake to create the historic story of Peachland. As a fundraiser, residents paid to have their likeness painted in the beach scene. As we've been working this week, so many people have stopped by to point out themselves, their grandchildren, their car and even their dog!

In Oct. 2019 & early 2020 the mural was vandalized twice and was restored once again to its original state as a result of many volunteer hours.

The Conclusion
In celebration of Canada’s 150th Birthday the Peachland Community Arts Council unofficially for a few months broke the Guinness World Record (the largest number of participants painting a ‘paint by number’ at one venue). 6048 visitors to the Peachland Art Gallery painted a ONE – 1” SQUARE on our 6 x 7 foot canvas, and signed our participants log book acknowledging their work and recorded their square number. The previous world record holder for a paint-by-number prior to that was populous Victoria in Hong Kong, China with 2603 participants. However, that record has now been beaten in December 2017 by the city of Doha, Quatar, with a gigantic 24 by 35 foot giant image of the Emir of Qatar. Thanks to you, our members, to visitors from around the province, country, even the world, and most of all to our wonderful volunteers – Peachland with its Art Gallery is now proudly on the Map. It has been fun for a short time being number ONE and in this way celebrating Canada’s history.

Take a walk down Peachland's Rainbow Sidewalk in front of the Peachland Historic School, Art Gallery and Visitor Centre. It is believed to be the largest rainbow sidewalk in BC and represents through the actions of Mayor Cindy Fortin and Council the proud tolerance and diverse acceptance of the Citizens of Peachland toward the LGBTQ2S+ community of BC and Canada.
