At the OPEN MIC, June 13, in the facilities of OUR SPACE, a sold-out crowd was treated (among other great entertainment) to Tears in Heaven sung by Peachland Mayor Patrick Van Minsel accompanied by the grand piano generously donated recently by the Venturi family of Kelowna.
Note to PerformersGood morning,
I want to congratulate you again on your excellent performance at the Open Mic last evening! What a fabulous evening it was, with a wonderful attendance, and such a special celebration of the first time in Our SPACE, with the new piano!! Your participation is what it's all about, and I am very grateful to you for preparing, practising, and having the courage and confidence to bring your music and spoken word to the public. There is no substitute for a LIVE performance, and what it gives us all is beyond measure. We have created a safe, inclusive place for events such as this, and who knows what might come of opening the doors for future community gatherings! Please stay tuned on the Arts Council website, peachlandarts.ca, for the summer series of Peachland's Got Talent - you are most welcome to be a competitor, and pass the word to other talented friends and family to sign up too! (I'll attach the poster, feel free to circulate it.) best wishes, Paula |
Open MIC was a sell out with 17 performers and a wide variety of acts including piano, vocals, guitar, ukulele, comedy, and spoken word. Paula Mclaughlin who emceed and organized the concert reports that the younger students performing on the piano have gained confidence, the more advanced playing Bach, Chopin, jazz and pop tunes. One young lady named Bella will be taking her vocal talents to a national competition in Toronto next month. There was a cowgirl poet telling tales of her life on the ranch. There were some beautiful folk songs of John Denver, Carole King, Gordon Lightfoot - and there was Tony who whistled like a bird and played uke. Derek shared his tongue-in-cheek comedy, and our mayor sang songs in Flemish and French with empathetic sensitivity!
