Dear members:

Yes, they’re blooming on Drought Hill - those yellow flowers, the arrowleaf balsamroot - even where the wildfire raged uphill from the 97 last year! The white flowers, too - Saskatoon berry bushes - in abundance! And magnificent Magnolia blossoms on Springfield and Cawston in Kelowna! So spring is here at last! Hurrah!!!

The new exhibition “Echoes of Places” & “Beautiful Together” opened on Saturday at the Peachland Art Gallery, featuring the mixed media abstractions of Jenny Lewis, Kelly Taylor and Paula Charter. This is a playful exhibition that reflects the individual personalities and exploratory styles of each artist. Experience the unique expressiveness of these artists by browsing the slideshow on the website link before viewing the exhibition itself, which runs until Sunday, May 10.

The Okanagan Folk School will hold its Annual General Meeting at 6 pm in Our SPACE at the Peachland Art Gallery on Saturday, April 18. They’ll be reflecting on last year’s accomplishments and looking to the future over a selection of wine, coffee, tea, and other beverages, along with snacks, as they confer. They are also seeking individuals to join their Board of Directors. If you have a passion for the arts, with culture and your community, they would like to hear from you.

The Okanagan Folk School is offering three ideal classes for beginners that are particularly family-friendly. Beads and Beyond is a hands-on class where you learn to create a simple yet strong bracelet with the help of Silvana Terry. This is a perfect project for beginners. You are shown how to secure your materials (provided by the teacher) and attach a clasp to finish a piece that you can wear proudly every day or craft as a gift. This is the perfect workshop for a family or a friend get-together! The dates are set for April 17 and April 24 from 1 to 4 pm and 7 to 10 pm at the Okanagan Folk School in Our SPACE in the Yellow Schoolhouse on Beach Avenue. The number of students ranges from 1 to 10. Tickets cost from $50 to $55 at the underlined link.

While in Kelowna, you might like to check out the paintings of Louise Dee in her exhibition, The Lost Art of Waiting, which runs until Saturday, May 2, at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art. Dee’s paintings focus on the experience of waiting as an art form - the lapse in time from one moment to the next that everyone has experienced - moments in a lineup, for instance, without a companion or your cell phone to pass the time - how exactly have you waited? “In 2023, (Dee) completed an MA in Fine Art at City and Guilds of London Art School in the UK, where her studies focused on historical and philosophical ideas surrounding physical and psychological wellness.“ The gallery is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 11 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm. Closed Sundays and Mondays.

The Kelowna Actors Theatre will be taking you back to the golden age of Broadway with their iconic hit Luck Be a Lady Tonight! starting Wednesday, April 22 and running until May 10. This is a story of gamblers, showgirls, missionaries and the rolling of dice for the sake of love. High roller Nathan Detroit tries to ensure a spot for his crap game by betting fellow Sky Masterson that he’ll not be able to take missionary, Sarah Brown, out on a date. How many of you remember Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat? This is considered one of the greatest musical comedies ever written. Tickets are available Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 pm with a matinee at 1 pm and on Sunday at 2 pm.

Tickets are available

This Wednesday’s film at the Orchard Plaza, as mentioned in the last newsletter, is Uiksaringitara – Wrong Husband. Hopefully, you have already purchased your tickets. Next week’s film is the first in the Kelowna Film Society spring series at the Landmark Grand 10 (note change of cinema and time) on April 22 at 6:30 pm won countless awards, including best actor and best director at Cannes 2025, and was nominated for a best picture Oscar. ”The Secret Agent is a masterpiece of modern political cinema and one of the year’s most innovative achievements. It tells the story of an ordinary man ensnared in Brazil’s political turmoil during the late 1970s. Yet it feels urgently alive in the present. This is not a straightforward political thriller or a nostalgic period piece. It’s an expansive, original and daring epic that blends intrigue, comedy and bureaucratic paranoia into something very unique. Both deadly serious and seriously playful, it suggests that contemporary horrors will inevitably become yesterday’s news. But we should not let those voices from the past go silent. They still have things to tell us.” This is a long film at 2 hours and 41 minutes in Portuguese, English, and German with English subtitles, but well worth time spent!

Ah well! Let’s make hay while the sun shines! Shall we?
